Jesus Interaction With Peter (John 21:15-19)

“Do You Love Me?” (vs. 15-17)
Verse 15
Why does Jesus call Peter Simon?
John 1:42 “He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).”
This is a rebuke from Jesus to Peter who was acting as his former self.
Do you love Me more then what?
If you look at the context you will see after Jesus’ death he want back to fishing. Does Peter love Jesus more then his career.
Peter’s Response
Recognition of Jesus’s omniscience
You know.
Jesus’ Call
Feed my lambs
Verse 16
Jesus has the same exchange with Peter
Verse 17
Why a third time?
What was different this time?
Why was peter grieved?
Deeper Context
Love
The first 2 times Jesus uses the word agopa
Highest form of sacrificial love
Pete used the word Philaio
A lesser brotherly love.
It may show what kind of love Peter actually had for Christ.
This is coming after Peter said he was willing to die with him and then he denied him 3 times.
Peter Death (vs.18-19)
What is Jesus telling Peter? Why is it so important after the exchange “do you love me”
Jesus is showing Peter he will love Jesus in the agope way.
Peter will be crucified like Jesus
Jesus again commands Peter to “Follow Me”

You “Follow Me” (John 21:20-23)

Don’t Look Around (Vs. 20-23)
Are you willing to follow Christ no matter what happens to others around you?
Will you do what Jesus is asking of you?
